9 Days On The Road ~ Location: Prague, Czech Republic ~ Transportation: Bus

After an incredible time in Munich we were really sad to leave Germany. The weather was getting warmer and it almost felt like spring. However we knew it was time to go and we were excited to see Prague. We boarded our bus at 23:55, right on time, and while we were waiting at the bus station we did an Italian lesson together.

We woke up in Prague at 6:00 and the cold slapped us in the face as soon as we got off the bus. We walked in the tube station that would take us to our Couchsurfing host Vítězslav, and we soon realised we weren't in Germany anymore. The ticket machine only worked with coins and didn't have an interactive screen in different languages, but a series of buttons (like a vending machine) with tickets to different areas of Prague! This was the first time in the whole trip we felt a bit confused. We found a cash point few meters away and figured out we needed 100 Kč for our tickets, but we could only withdraw from 200 Kč. Of course we didn't get any coins so we were back to square one!

We went to all the shops open in the station to see if they could change the money, until we found a little shop that looked like an Off Licence, and the guy told us he sold tickets too. We paid by card because it was easier, and we thought we would use the money we withdrew for something else. Funnily enough, the tube was really clean, modern, easy to navigate, and every station, train, tram, has free WiFi. So I don't know why the ticket machines are so antiquated.

We got off the tube and it was snowing, we reached Vítězslav's flat around 7:00. As soon as we got in we hit the bed and slept for couple of hours.

Here you can watch the video about our time in Prague:

Our itinerary included:

~ Charles Bridge

~ Prague Astronomical Clock

~ Old Town Square

~ Jewish Museum in Prague

~ Speculum Alchemiae

~ Holy Ghost Church

~ Cubist houses

~ Újezd

~ Prague Castle

After our nap we took a tram into the city. It was raining, so filming wasn't the easiest task because the lenses would constantly get wet, even if I was under an umbrella. I definitely recommend walking down the river to Charles Bridge, it was such a beautiful walk.

Best Moment

I was really happy to see that little beaver in the river! Also, we stumbled upon a little church and there was a choir singing behind a curtain, it was really special; and we discovered an Alchemy museum with potions and magic infusions, which was really incredible! Apparently this museum was once a real alchemy shop filled with the brightest minds of Czech Republic and the royal family would consult them daily on all sorts of requirements.

Worst Moment

The weather without a doubt! I really cannot stand cold and damp weather, and I was really suffering walking around under the snow. So we took every chance we had to find warmth in a tram or random shops. Missing our bus to Vienna wasn't the best...but I will tell you all about it in my next blog.

Healthy Tips

We found a Starbucks with vegan cakes so we thought to treat ourselves to some cake and coffee, since the weather was miserable and my hands were turning blue! It was 10 pounds well spent. We cannot always be healthy!

Zero Waste Tips

After we missed our bus to Vienna we had some time to spare at the station, and we thought to spend the cash money we had and buy some food for the bus trip. We found a little supermarket which only had ready meals and snacks wrapped in loads of plastic, and we were really tempted to buy something for the sake of it. But since we had time we decided to go for a walk outside the station and after a 5 min walk we found a big supermarket! We bought some sesame bread, peanut butter, and we even found hummus in a jar, which I have never seen! So my tip is: never give up; if you don't find what you are looking for in the first shop find another one. Eventually you will find a better alternative and it might be just round the corner.

Final warnings: Prague is a must! I enjoyed this city so much, the architecture and history is really fascinating. I recommend bringing some coins for the public transport tickets (or find a shop that sells them), and if you are visiting during cold or poor weather, use the trams to see the city! I loved our ride on tram 17, which goes along the river, and tram 22, which took us on top of a snowy hill towards Prague Castle.
